Two leaders of Cyprus publish a joint message of peace
Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders recorded a video message in which each is expressed in the language of the other. A new show of unity between two leaders who want that 2016 as the year of the reunification of Cyprus.
“I hope that the New Year will allow for us Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots to once again live in peace in our reunited homeland. Happy New Year,” said Anastasiades, first in Greek and then in Turkish. At his side, Mr. Akinci said in Greek: “I hope the New Year brings permanent peace, tranquility and welfare to all Cypriots. Happy New Year,” first in Turkish and then in Greek.
As a reminder, Cyprus has been split since 1974 when Turkey partially invaded the island after a coup aiming at “enosis” (union) with Greece took place. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), headed by Mr. Akinci, is only recognized by Ankara.
